Three Tips on How To Prep your Kids for Family Photos

For Clients

Getting Your Little Ones Camera-Ready: A Parent’s Guide

Booking a photoshoot is exciting, and when it comes to involving your kids, a little preparation can go a long way. The groundwork you lay beforehand – discussing outfits, choosing locations, and setting expectations – plays a big role in the success of your session. Particularly for kids aged 2-7, it’s crucial to set the right tone so they feel comfortable and ready to shine in front of the camera. Here are three tried-and-tested tips to help prepare your kids for a fun and successful photoshoot.

1. Introduce Them to Your Photographer

Start by familiarizing your kids with the photographer – in this case, me, Shannon! Show them a picture of me and casually refer to me as Miss Shannon, Aunty Shannon, Tia Shannon, or Ateh Shannon. This approach helps remove the ‘stranger’ aspect and makes kids feel more at ease during the shoot. A familiar face is always less intimidating, and dropping my name in conversations will make them feel like they’re meeting a friend, not just a photographer.

2. Home Photoshoot Practice

A bit of role-playing can work wonders. Spend a few minutes each week having a mini ‘photoshoot’ at home. Let them play the model while you, with a camera or phone, play the photographer. Give them simple instructions like smiling or making a silly face. This practice not only familiarizes them with following directions but also with being in front of a camera. Remember to keep these sessions short and sweet, and always end with a small reward for their cooperation!

3. Bring Along Some Incentives

On the day of the photoshoot, consider bringing along some small rewards or incentives. A favorite treat, a small toy, or the promise of a fun activity can work wonders in keeping them engaged and cooperative during the shoot. While it might deviate from your usual parenting style, these little bribes can turn the photoshoot into an enjoyable experience for them, setting a positive tone for future photography sessions.

"I love the people I photograph. I mean, they're my friends. I've never met most of them or I don't know them at all, yet through my images I live with them."

Photographer, dog mom, book hoarder, and Trader Joe’s loyalist. I’m a Pisces, an ENFJ, and an Enneagram 3, which basically means I feel everything, care deeply, and always have a running to-do list (with color coding).

These days, I’m also figuring out life as a new mom — balancing baby snuggles with camera gear and reminding myself to slow down and soak it all in. I’ve built a career out of noticing the details, chasing the light, and turning everyday moments into art.
